Starter:  Make a list of everything you know about Narrative Elements.

Assignment:  FINISH Narrative Element Handout - Review for Summative

***For those who finished yesterday, when I had a substitute, arrangements were made to have free time in the library.        

***Things to focus on when completing the handout:  

-Diary entry writing should have details and be written in the first person - using pronoun "I."  Read the note in the handout about length expectation.

-Bio poems need to be 7-8 sentences long.  

-captions/news headlines on pictures need to be representative of the plot, not just telling what the picture is of.  

-events listed on setting section need to be representative of what happened specifically at that setting.

Monday, 4/27

Starter:  Theme is an over-all idea of what you think the author wanted you to gain from having read his work.  Create a picture of the scene that you think best represents what a theme for the novel would be.  Write the theme is a complete sentence.

Assignment:  Complete Narrative Element Handout from Friday, 4/24
Student will have one more day on the handout.

8TH GRADE ART

Assignment: students will continue to work on Stain Glass,  today we will spray our masks to bet the base coat.  Students are also working on the Fair Book Cover. 

FOUNDATION ART

Assignment: Students are critiquing the Symmetrical Balance assignment, They are working on the Fair Book Cover and they are also working on Space/ positive and negative word.  

DRAWING

Assignment: Students have all started on their Final Projects and have at least a base to get thinking of what they are wanting and how to go about doing it.  Students are working on Fair Book Cover, and they are also doing the Line Animal with the sketch book for them as well.  The Monochromatic eye should be in and will be graded shortly.

Starter:  Trace Tom’s courtship with Becky.  In two columns make a list showing ways their relationship is childish, and ways it is adult-like.

Friday, 4/24

Starter: Mark Twain presents a picture of the townspeople of St. Petersburg, Missouri, their values and their social system,  Imagine that you are spending the summer there.  Write a letter to a friend describing the town, its ways of life, and its most interesting residents. 

Video:  Finish,  we ended with Huck back in town and the picnic about to commence. 

Turn in: list of twenty differences you found between the movie and the novel. 

If time permits we will start on the Biography poems.

April 21 ch 35 summary

8TH GRADE ART
     Students are continuing to work on their stain glass pictures.

FOUNDATION ART
     Students were introduced to Balance they will be doing a symmetrical balance design.  There is a specific process they will need to use in order to accomplish this assignment. They will also be doing a critique on their Portraits the importance of proportions and values on this assignment is vital for better result of a human person.

Tuesday, 4/21

Starter:  Choose a character from the novel, which you believe you are most alike.  Write an 8-9 sentence letter to the character telling them ways you are alike.  Things you might include - ideas, interests, behaviors, relationships you have in common.     

Audio:  Chapter 35 and conclusion - end of novel

Review:  Chapters 33-35

Summative:  Chapters 33-35  (Notes can be used)

Turn in:  Notes - chapters 33-35 (will not be accepted late)

Upcoming:  Tom and Huck video (Disney) - The showing of the movie, and the work that will be involved from watching it, will meet the standard RL 8.7, analyzing how filmed  production departs from text.  We should be starting this on Wednesday (hopefully)

Chapter 35 Summary

• Tom and Huck's big haul is the talk of the town, and soon everyone around is digging under trees and searching haunted houses for buried treasure.
• Tom and Huck's money is put in the bank, so that each boy has an income of one dollar each weekday, and a quarter every other Sunday – enough to pretty much cover any and all expenses they might have.
• Judge Thatcher is left with a high opinion of Tom.
• Huck is miserable. He hates being kept clean by the Widow's servants.  He hates eating with a knife and fork, going to church and reading and talking "properly" and basically not getting to do anything thing that he wants to do.
• After three weeks of suffering, Huck slips away. Three days later Tom finds him sleeping in a barrel, just like the old days.
• Tom talks Huck into going back to the Widow Douglas's; when Huck protests and says that he doesn't like his new life, Tom tells him that "everybody does it that way."
• Tom attempts to use reason to change Huck's mind.  He tells Huck, “You need to be respectable to be in Tom Sawyer's Gang.”
• Huck goes back to the Widow Douglas's.
• The boys decide that the initiation ceremony for Tom's gang will take place that night, at midnight, and include all the usual oaths and blood.
• Huck can't wait to see what happens.

8TH GRADE ART
     Students are working on the STAIN GLASS.  They should be finished with the roughs and starting on the cutting out part of the assignment

FOUNDATION ART
     Students will be introduced to BALANCE this project is a process so they better understand the difference in the types of balance that is out there to gain a better cohesive composition. Students portraits with values should be getting closer to being done they are due on the 22nd, Wednesday. 

DRAWING
     Students are working on and finishing up the monochromatic eye as well as the line animal.  Students in this class should be working to perfect their values and drawing skills, not seeing if they can rush and be the first one done on any project.

Monday, 4/20

Starter:  Write a paragraph explaining how you would spend $12,000, which in our day is more like $300,000.  

Audio:  Chapters 33 and 34 with notes

Upcoming:  Finish novel (ch. 35) tomorrow.  Summative on Chapters 33-35

Chapter 33 summary

• Everyone rushes back to the cave.  Injun Joe is found dead at the door.
• There is evidence that he tried to burrow under the door with his knife; he ate candles and bats for sustenance, and collected water dripping from a stalagmite by using a cup made out of stone.
• Injun Joe is buried near the cave.
• Huck tells Tom about the whole Widow Douglas thing.
• Tom tells Huck that the treasure is not at the tavern – it is in the cave.
• Tom and Huck head back to the hole where Tom and Becky escaped from the cave.
• In the cave, Tom stumbles upon the piece of useless candle he and Becky left stuck to the cave wall. They go to where Tom saw Injun Joe in the cave, where there is a cross drawn in smoke on a big rock nearby.
• Huck is rather spooked by the whole thing, but Tom helps him keep it together.
• The boys stumble upon an area in the cave strewn with blankets and old pieces of meat –there's no treasure chest in sight.
• They find a strange spot near the base of the rock with the cross.
• Tom digs with his knife and uncovers a secret passage that had been covered up with boards. 
• They boys follow it to the end, where they find the treasure chest, along with some guns and stuff.
• The put the treasure into individual bags, and leave the other things for future criminal activities.
• The boys hurry back to town, to hide the treasure in the Widow Douglas's woodshed, but they run into the Welshman and he takes them to the widow's house.
• When they get there all the village big wigs are there, along with Aunt Polly, Sid, and Mary.
• Tom and Huck are made to go upstairs, wash, and put on suits.

Chapter 34 Summary

• When the boys get upstairs, Huck asks Tom for help escaping the house. Tom tells him to calm down.
• Sid shows up and tells Tom that the party is for the Welshman and his sons, in order to congratulate them for helping her out.
• Sid also mentions that the Widow Douglas has some kind of secret she is going to share -  the story about Huck tracking Joe and his accomplice.
• Sid tells Tom and Huck that maybe he was the one responsible for letting everyone know about Huck's involvement.
• Tom hits Sid and sends him running.
• When everyone is downstairs, the Welshman, otherwise known as Mr. Jones, tells Huck's story and thanks him for his help.
• The widow tells everyone that she intends to take care of Huck and have him educated.
• At this point, Tom yells out, "Huck don't need it. Huck's rich!"
• Tom tells them all to wait a minute, then runs outside.
• He comes back with the sacks of gold and pours the money out on the table.
• Tom explains that half of the money is his, and the other half is Huck's, before telling everyone about their search for the treasure.
• Tom and Huck have found more than $12,000 dollars. (Assuming the setting is around 1850, that’s nearly $300,000 today).

Summative:  Chapters 29-32

Assignment:  Predict and Illustrate Handout – Injun Joe, Where Did You Go?  

Predict and Illustrate - Injun Joe, Where Did You Go? (follows end of Ch. 32 – pg. 197)

Objective:  Students will use contextual evidence and clues throughout the story to make a prediction  on what will become of Injun Joe (RL 8.1 ), demonstrating how dialogue or incidents propel action and provoke a decision (RL 8.3). 

Directions:  Consider everything you have learned about Injun Joe – how his behaviors have impacted the other characters in the novel.  Follow the information provided.    

Situation:  Injun Joe is hiding out in the cave in which Tom and Becky were trapped.

Dialogue of Mr. Thatcher to Tom:  “To prevent anyone else getting lost in the cave, I had the place sealed up and triple locked two weeks ago.”
