Starter:  When Huck first knocks on the Welshman’s door, and identifies himself as Huck Finn, he is told, “It ain’t a name to open many doors, I judge!  The next time he knocks on the Welshman’s door he says, “It’s only Huck Finn!”  The Welshman’s response – “It’s a name that can open this door night or day, lad! – and welcome!”   Write a paragraph (8-9 sentences), explaining what the word “only” implies when Huck says, “It is only Huck Finn!”  Include in your response how cause and effect plays into this – (cause is what happens, effect is the result).

 Chapter 32 Summary

• It's Tuesday night and everyone's sad and tired. Mrs. Thatcher and Aunt Polly are overwhelmed by anxiety.
• In the middle of the night the bells start ringing: the kids have been found. Everyone runs out to meet them.
• Tom is the center of attention again.  He tells everyone how he stumbled upon a passage that led outside of the cave – how he and Becky escaped, hitched a ride on a passing boat, and made their way home.
• All the searchers are called back and given the good news.  Tom and Becky are given a few days to recuperate.
• When Tom feels better, he attempts to visit Huck, but Huck's laid up too.  There will be no Treasure hunting for a while.
• Injun Joe's companion has been found floating in the river.
• When Tom hears that Huck is feeling better, he checks on Becky before heading over to see Huck.
• When he gets to the Thatcher house he finds out from Judge Thatcher that the entrance to the cave was locked up with a big metal door.
• Tom tells Judge Thatcher that Injun Joe is in the cave.

Wednesday, 4/15

Starter:  When Tom wants to stop by the Widow Douglas’ home, Becky says, “But what will mamma say?”  Huck says, “How’ll she ever know?”  Tom goes on to say, “All she wants is that you’ll be safe; and I bet you she’d ‘a’ said go there if she’d ‘a’ thought of it. I know she would.”  Write a paragraph (8-9 sentences), about a time you, or someone you know, was talked into doing something without permission, – OR – you were the one talking the other person into it.  Include the persuasive reasoning that was used.

Chapter 30 Summary

• Huck goes back to the Welshman's house.  He is welcomed and invited to breakfast.
• Huck wants to know what happened the night before after he left. 
• The Welshman tells Huck that he and his boys got within fifteen feet of the men. The  Welshman sneezed and a gunfight broke out.  The criminals fired a couple of shots and ran into the woods.
• The Welshman tells Huck the search is still going on.
• He asks Huck what the two guys looked like, then he sends his sons to tell the sheriff.  Huck begs them not to reveal his identity.
• The Welshman asks Huck how he came upon the men. Huck makes up a story about not being able to sleep the night before.  He says he walked by the tavern and saw two guys smoking cigars.  He recognized them as the Spaniard and some other "ragged looking devil."
• Huck's story falls apart.  He says that he heard the Spaniard talking about hurting the widow.  Eventually he reveals that the Spaniard is Injun Joe.
• When the Welshman reveals that he and the boys found a package the men had dropped,  Huck yells "OF WHAT?"
• Huck is relieved to find out the package was only some burglar tools.
• The Widow Douglas thanks the Welshman.
• At church, when everyone gets to talking, they realize Becky and Tom are not where they thought they were. 
• Everybody rushes toward the caves.
• Huck gets sick and is confined to bed. The Widow Douglas takes care of him.
• By the afternoon, not much progress has been made. Reports indicate that searchers have discovered the words "BECKY & TOM" written on the cave wall with candle smoke.
• Huck finds out the room filled with alcohol at the Temperence Tavern has been found; he is relieved to find out there had been no treasure found.  
• Huck thinks maybe the treasure is gone forever.

Chapter 31 Summary

• Tom and Becky have been in the cave for the past three days.
• Tom happened upon a passage behind a waterfall that led deeper into the cave.  
• They are swarmed by a bunch of bats, but Tom gets them safely into another area. 
• They find a cavern with a big underground lake.
• While sitting and talking they realize they haven't heard anybody else in a while.
• To avoid the bats, they look for another way out of the cave.  Becky hopes they don’t get lost
• They run around in circles.  Tom starts hollering for someone; Becky gets scared.
• Becky gets mad when she finds out that Tom didn't make any marks to help them get back to the entrance. She falls to the ground, crying.
• Tom tries to comfort her. 
• They set out again but this time they're forced to use only one candle at a time, so they don’t run out.
• They get tired and sit again. Becky falls asleep.
• They lose track of what day it is. They wander a bit more, then sit down for a piece of "wedding cake."
• They're on their last candle, and they realize that nobody will know they’re gone until at least Sunday, because everyone thinks they are sleeping at someone else’s place. 
• The last candle burns out.  They hear something in the distance and run toward the noise. 
• Tom attempts to yell for the searchers' attention, but he gets no response.
• They go back to the spring.  Tom gives Becky a piece of "kite-line" to hold and sets out with the other end in his hand.
• Tom sees a hand holding a candle. He yells in joy until he realizes it is Injun Joe!
• The shout scares Injun Joe away, and Tom is able to make it back to Becky.
• Becky and Tom rest, then Tom sets out again to find a way out.

4/14

8th grade art
     We critiqued our color wheel's with tint projects.  Students have their stain glass project they will then be able to work on these. We will be redoing the mask on Thursday to get these a little better.
Wednesday we have our Midterm project we will be critiquing those that have be brought in so far are nicely done. Thanks for the help parents.

Foundation Art
     Students were given the portraits with values and some were able to start them.  we will be critiquing the midterm projects on Wednesday.  Students who have been working on them it shows in how well and even how much time has been spent.  Thank you parents for the help.

Drawing
     Students were given a new project.  I have always had a hard time coming up with a title so I have limited it to line animal.  Students seem to finally grasp the concept of just what I wanted from them.  Students will be completing other projects as well but they are doing well in the focusing department.

LA
     Students were able to do the summative on chapters 25-28 yesterday we will be continuing on with chapters 29-31.  Thank you for for your support.

April 13-17 all classes ch 29 summary

8th grade Art 
     We will be redoing the masks they did not turn out the way I wanted. We are critiquing the color wheel tomorrow - Tuesday.  Students were introduced to stain glass and what the process takes to make them they will make their own version of a stain glass.  MIDTERM PROJECTS DUE WEDNESDAY. DON'T BE LATE. 


Foundation Art 
     Students were to turn in the measured portraits we were introduced on 4/3 they are to finish the value forms if they have not done so.  MIDTERM PROJECTS DUE WEDNESDAY.  DON'T BE LATE.  Students were introduced to portraits with values.   They may use a grid to draw and get better proportions but other wise they need to have good proportions and values to complete. 

Drawing
     Students have the monochromatic eye and were introduced to the Line Animal this assignment has many facets they will need to get information about. They should ave their Glasses with values completed and sketch book #3 this is the ribbons.

Chapter 29 Summary

• Becky Thatcher is back in town, and she is having a picnic the next day.
• Tom and Becky spend the day playing with their classmates, and Tom tries not to think about Injun Joe and the treasure.
• Tom stays up waiting for Huck's signal, but Huck never comes.
• The next day Becky, Tom, and the other kids head out to have some fun.
• Tom convinces Becky to lie to her mother and say that she's spending the night at the Harpers' house so that she and Tom can spend more time together.
• Tom decides he might enjoy Becky's company more than to get the treasure.
• The kids explore caves.
• Night approaches and the kids head home.
• Huck has started his watch. Around eleven o'clock he hears a noise. Two figures walk by him carrying a box.
• Huck thinks about getting Tom but instead he follows the men to the grounds outside of the Widow Douglas's house.
• Huck hears Injun Joe's companion cursing. Someone is at the Widow's house, and they can't carry out their plan. Huck figures out that maybe this is the revenge "job" they were talking about.
• The other man wants to leave, but Injun Joe won't go.  He reminds his companion that the Widow Douglas's husband, a justice of the peace, had him charged for vagrancy and whipped, and he wants to get back at her as a result.
• The other man tells Injun Joe that he shouldn't kill her.
• Injun Joe says he's only interested in maiming her.
• Injun Joe intimidates the man into helping him; they decide to wait until the lights are off.
• Huck runs down the hill toward the nearest house, where the "Welshman," an older guy with two grown-up sons, lives.
• Huck bangs on the door and begs for help.
• With Huck, the Welshman and his sons head up to the widow's house, armed and ready.
• A sudden a gunfight begins.
• Huck runs in the other direction.

     Students started the mold for the mask and continued to paint.  They should be working on Mid-term sculptures. Due on the 15th of April.

Friday 4/3

Starter:  Write a paragraph (8-9 sentences) showing ways you connect to the story.  Use as many examples as possible.

Audio:  Chapters 25-27 with notes (The notes will be needed for the upcoming assignment, so get as much information as you can).

Chapter 25 summary

• Tom and Huck decide to look for a buried treasure. 
• They talk about where people might hide them - islands, under dead trees that have one limb sticking out, or in haunted houses.
• Since they've already been to Jackson's Island, they decide to start with a particular dead tree a few miles from town.
• Huck says he would use the treasure to have pie and a glass of soda every day, and go to the circus as much as possible. Tom says he's going to use his share of treasure to buy a drum, a "sure-'nough sword," a tie, a dog, and, to get married.
• They start digging at the tree, and then “realize" that you have to dig in the shadow of the dead branch, but it has to be done in the right shadow at midnight.
• They return at night and still no treasure.
• They go to look at the haunted house.

Chapter 26 Summary

• The next day they go to the haunted house at noon.
• They go back to the dead tree for their tools.
• Huck remembers that it's Friday, an "unlucky" day, and they put off treasure-hunting until later.
• Tom teaches Huck all about Robin Hood, and they spend the rest of the afternoon playing around.
• They meet at the same place, same time the next day, to go the haunted house.
• They look around on the first floor and then head upstairs.
• They hear someone walking toward the house.
• Two men enter the house – a man they know as the "old deaf and dumb Spaniard" and someone they've never seen before.
• The “deaf and dumb” Spaniard speaks and they recognize the voice as Injun Joe.
• Injun Joe and the other guy talk about a "job". 
• Joe curses "those infernal boys.”  Tom and Huck think he is talking about them.
• Injun Joe decides he's going to go into town to “finish the job," before heading out to Texas.
• They fall asleep but Tom and Huck are afraid they will wake them up if they try to leave.
• The men wake up again, and they start talking about "swag."
• Injun Joe lifts up a stone on the fireplace and takes out a bag of silver coins.
• Each man takes some of the money then Injun Joe starts digging a new hole to stash it in.
• Injun Joe strikes something hard in the ground  and finds a chest filled with gold coins.
• Injun Joe's buddy notices the pick and shovel sitting in the corner.
• Injun Joe is suspicious, but he's distracted by the thousands of dollars in the box.
• Injun Joe notices the dirt on the pick. They decide to bring the coins to Injun Joe's den, "Number Two – under the cross."
• Injun Joe picks up his knife and walks toward the stairs where Tom and Huck are hiding.
• The stairs collapse.
• Joe gives up looking, and the two men pack up and leave.
• Tom and Huck decide to figure out where "Number Two" is and get the money.
• Tom thinks Injun Joe is going to look for him to get revenge.

Chapter 27 Summary

• Tom tosses and turn all night and then decides the previous evening's events were just a dream, but since Huck remembers it too, Tom realizes it wasn’t a dream.
• Tom and Huck plan to figure out where the money is hidden.
• Tom decides that "Number Two" refers to a room number in one of the town's two taverns.
• Tom finds out one of the taverns is occupied by a lawyer, but the other is one is a mystery.
• Tom tells Huck he's sure the treasure's hidden in the "mystery" room.
• They plan on breaking into Number Two that evening by gathering up keys as many keys as they can to open the lock.
• They are on constant look out for Injun Joe.

March 30-31 and April 1-3 ch 22-24 handout

8th grade Art
     Students were introduced to their Mid-term Sculpture.  This will be due on the 15th of April.  Students were given a handout with all instructions.  The key is CREATIVITY.  Many things are not allowed but by using their creativity they will be able to come up with a great sculpture. A parent critique will need to accompany this sculpture.
     This week students are working on the color wheel.  They will do roughs then transfer the best onto small think with a 1/2 inch border.  Students will then be doing the color wheel using the primary and secondary colors to also make the tertiary colors.  Students will also be doing two tints with each color mixed.  Craftsmanship is a big part of this assignment because of the need to see the color change as well as the value change. We should be able to critique on Friday.

Foundation Art
    Students were introduced to their Mid-term Value project.  This will be due on the 15th if April.  Students were given a handout with the information  and instructions of the do's and don'ts of this project.  A parent critique will need to accompany this project.
     Monday students were given the second assignment dealing with values.  This is called the value forms.  Values are done in tiny circles for the students to get a good understanding of just how values are to be manipulated with a pencil.
     Tuesday we critiqued the Animal Depth composition.  They have been working on this assignment for some time.
     Friday students will be introduced to Portraits for the measuring/ proportions, and values.


Drawing
     Students were given sketch book assignment #3.  This is with ribbons/ value and color, utilize the page, cropping, overlapping all are part of the assignment. Students are completing their Value glasses they should be finished sometime this week.  They will be assigned the next project which will be a monochromatic eye.  Students will be doing this eye on small thick paper and will choose one color and add the values to that color.  Making sure it is complete with only one color.
     Students were introduced to their Final project.  This project students will need to have 3 or more references and combine them into one composition.  This composition is to become an original of their making.  It may be done in pencil, or color pencil or even oil pastels.  They will need to have it completed by the end of the year which will be due on the 29th of May.  This project should also be accompanied by a parent critique.

     Starter:  In the novel Tom has witnessed a murder, run away to an island, and attended his own funeral. Write a paragraph (8-9 sentences) about the most outrageous thing you, or someone you know, has done.
